Purple Mountain is located about 10 kilometres southwest of Killarney, on the eastern side of MacGillycuddy's Reeks. The four summits in this area - Purple Mountain, Purple Mountain Northeast, Tomies Mountain and Shehy, are separated from the rest of the Reeks by the Gap of Dunloe. The ideal route across Tomies and Purple Mountain and back through the Gap of Dunloe to Kate Kearney's Cottage is currently not recommended due to an ongoing access problem. Walkers are asked not to drive through the Gap of Dunloe or to park at the Head of the Gap due to the presence of jarveys, pedestrians and cyclists. -- Irish Peaks A Celebration of Ireland's Highest Mountains, Mountaineering Ireland, 2020
